Personal Learning
I’m participating in an NRC MOOC called Personal Learning (https://openedx.lpss.me) delivered by Stephen Downes and I’ll be recording my experiences and insights here throughout the course.
I’m participating in an NRC MOOC called Personal Learning delivered by Stephen Downes and I’ll be recording my experiences and insights here throughout the course.

In week 1 the course outline was explained and we were introduced to the OpenEdX platform which seems fairly straightforward as platform for learning and pretty simple technically.

Now, in week 2, we are talking about reusable learning objects. One of the videos describes the concept of a repository of reusable objects that can be accessed by many and re-purposed to produce different learning experiences. In 2016, in Personal Learning, the shift that I see is that we, the learners, are contributing to what is available in the course to learn about. So does that mean that the concept of learning objects has changed? Do we include shared resources under the learning objects umbrella? Or is the co-created learning object, i.e. the collective resources that have been shared, considered to be a new reusable learning object?

I have to confess I’m struggling – I’ve watched the videos and read the papers provided in the course, but what to do now is my question? I’ll give you a couple of examples of how I’m struggling:
  • I’ve put a couple of links into Diigo and I’ve read some of the resources in Diigo that others have posted. What I’m not sure about is what I’m supposed to do with what I’ve learned. Is it simply up to me to repurpose and feed forward perhaps?
  • On the Week 2, Monday page, Discussion and Assignments are referred to – but I’m not sure what to discuss where? And I’m not sure what the assignments are? Am I missing something? Is this post part of the assignment? Are the Diigo resources and the Twitter posts part of the assignment?

The PLE concept is not new to me – academically I understand and embrace it. I use my PLE for learning all the time. So strangely, I enrol in a course about personal learning and am craving something more structured. I want explicit instructions. It's what I'm used to. :)

So this loose, semi-structured, self-directed learning environment is a little uncomfortable. In one of the video’s Stephen said that “What we need [for good learning] is a place where people can do things”. So I’m just going to try doing things and see where it takes me!!
